Site Suitability Analysis for New Libraries in Queens, NY

Which sites should be selected for new libraries in Queens, NY?

Through a process that included rasterizing Census data, reclassifying the layers, and performing map algebra, I produced decision maps and was able to assign suitability scores to the different vacant lots. The six variables considered were: 1) distance from nearest library, 2) affordable housing density, 3) percentage of adults with no high school diploma, 4) percentage of populations under age 18, 5) percentage of foreign-born populations, and 6) percentage of adults who spoke English “less than very well.”

The three slides following the cover slide identify the three recommended sites for new libraries based on the decision map as well as lot size for small-to-medium sized libraries.

This project was also re-processed through ESRI’s ModelBuilder tool:

Methods: Kernel density estimations, Euclidian distance rasters, map algebra, multi-step, vector- and raster-based, geoprocessing-centric decision analysis

Applications: ArcMap & Illustrator
